Hate speech, say what?
“A bias-motivated, hostile, malicious speech aimed at a person or a group of people because of some of their actual or perceived innate characteristics.”
When we focus on people in the LGBTQIA+ community, hate speech can be extremely violent and often extends widely into private life. Personal violation often has the goal of silencing, oppressing and excluding those affected. Hate speech isn’t only used towards the LGBTQIA+ community, but unfortunately also within. It doesn’t only affect people personally, but it also confirms general false conceptions towards the LGBTQIA+ community and feeds all systems that are disadvantageous for them.
Do you want to break the silence and raise awareness with us? Awesome!
In the context of hate speech against LGBTQIA+, the team of Brave New You will be organising a live discussion during the Pride in which you can participate. This discussion will be a safe platform by and (not exclusively) for LGBTQIA+ people who would want to share their experience(s) with hate speech in any shape or form. We will also be joined by our special guest … !
Have you been a witness or a victim of hate speech(es)? Slide in our DM’s or send an email before the 18th September to bissi@rainbowhousebrussels.org with your info to join the discussion. You can either send us your written or taped testimonies or exchange with us in live during the debate! Up to you!
